Brasilia Dice 50

e-Types invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Oscar Niemeyer's masterpiece Brasilia
e-Types was invited by Argentine design studio Brasilia Prima to submit a poster design in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Brazilian capitol Brasilia

Working from an interview with Oscar Niemeyer by our very own Michael Thouber, e-Types created a typographic homage to the city, it’s visionary architecture and, of course, to the man behind its creation; Oscar Niemeyer himself.

10+ exhibition at Danish Design Centre

e-Types' visual identity for Koncerthuset chosen as design milestone for the Noughties
The exhibition ‘10+ Design Forecast’ at the Danish Design Centre examines the trends that characterize the present and those that will come to characterize the future. The exhibition examines ten examples from design history through the first decade of the millennium. Together, they draw a picture of Danish design in the 21st century while offering a glimpse into the future.

According to the curators the past ten years of Danish design history are particularly interesting. Design has developed in completely new directions, mainly as a result of digital and technological developments. Developments that have left their permanent mark on the way we think about design today. The ten examples exhibited at DDC not only illustrate the breadth and diversity of today’s design competence, but also point to a future where design thinking is an integral part of society and progress.

The exhibition is open April 29th – October 31st 2010.

India Rising

New book by e-Types’ Thomas Sehested: India is on the verge of becoming a geopolitical and cultural superpower.
India will dominate the global agenda of the future. And it is more about business than incense. The country is working its way back to the World stage as  both a cultural, economic and political superpower. In his book, Thomas Sehested gives a detailed account of the diversity of the New India. In words and images he describes the melting pot of religions, economic growth, great poverty, impressing effectiveness and disturbing chaos that is India today.

Thomas Sehested is a historian and works as a senior adviser in e-Types on issues of design and communication. His book is based on a life-long passion for India, which he has cris-crossed during 20 years of travels and interviews spanning a long range of both businesses and individuals.

The book is published at Lindhardt & Ringhof Business on April 20, 2010 and has already achieved high acclaim. Danish Business Daily Børsen calls the book “a must-read” for anyone doing business in or with India and gave the book 5 out of 6 mortarboards in its review.

e-Types does Estonia

Rasmus Ibfelt serves as Head of The Jury at the ADC Estonia Design Awards, Art Directors Club Estonia.
" It was a great honor and truly exciting to get to see the work of some of the talent coming out of Estonia. They have an amazing international outlook, which really comes through in the work produced while still being innovative and developing a strong style of their own. I had a great time and met some real talent." comments Rasmus Ibfelt.

Rasmus also had the chance to say a few words about e-Types and the way we work, focusing on the contamination between cultural clients and big business - "We really feel that the two have a lot to offer each other and have experienced time and time again how the two worlds can draw inspiration from their respective mental modes and workflows" says Rasmus Ibfelt.

HOKUS POKUS

e-Types designs Qee for Vinyl CPH
e-Types was invited to design a Qee for the Vinyl CPH exhibition, celebrating urban culture and graphic design by letting different firms and artists decorate a vinyl toy. The proceeds from the following auction going towards supporting the Red Cross' work in 3rd world countries.

Having a clean slate to do what we wanted to the vinyl toy, we decided to cleave the thing in two. After all, more Qees mean more money for the needy, right? We had some friends mount the two halves to a couple of mirrors and package them in each their wooden box. We decided to call them HOKUS and POKUS respectively -  a reference to the optical illusion created by the reflections of the dolls.

Finally, as the astute observer will notice, there is no type what so ever.    Yeah, e-Types does do stuff without type. Rarely... but still.

New Royal Stamp Designed by e-Types

New stamp commemorates Queen Margrethe II´s 70th birthday
The Danish Postal Services (Post Danmark A/S) has a long standing tradition of releasing series of stamps in honour of our regents, starting with the first series released in 1904 featuring King Christian IX. Today the stamp embodies some of our most valued features in it´s intricate connection with the act of sending a letter - the personal, the reflective and the emotional surplus in an age of instant communication.

Upon receiving the assignment, the e-Types team started off by examining the heritage of the danish regent stamp. Marveling at the craftsmanship and expertise necessary to produce these stamps, the team wanted to create a modern stamp, while staying true to the traditions of the old. Building upon a technique that dates back to Christian X, e-Types decided to use two colors instead of the more common single color brought on by later developments in technology. By approaching the stamp in this way, the stamp manages a strikingly modern expression by recycling traditions of yore.

The design and craftsmanship was developed in collaboration with the photographer Casper Sejersen and the engraver Martin Mörk, drawing on each  expertise to create a compelling, simple and aesthetically distinctive stamp that manages to challenge the visual conventions surrounding the regent stamps.

Trash Everything!

Jonas Hecksher designs bin for Vipp's 70th anniversary
Vipp celebrated its 70th anniversary by hosting a charity auction in New York City, auctioning off a number of their iconic trash bins. Each bin was customized by a different design or cultural luminary, including the likes of Yoko Ono, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Helena Christensen, John Baldessari, Oscar de la Renta, Kid Robot and Yves Béhar.

Jonas Hecksher's bin, dubbed "Trash Everything", is a wild romp through western society and its values and social structures. Far from being a pious lifted finger, it seeks to channel the sleaze of Lou Reed, the destructive yet beautiful desperation of Lydia Lunch and the crude and blatant in-your-faceness of Lux Interior, reminding us that creativity is often at its best when it comes from destruction. As Jonas says "Sometimes its best just to trash everything and start over again."

The auction was held in collaboration with design retailer Design Within Reach (DWR) and will benefit DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.
