The J.F. Willumsen Museum is a museum dedicated to the work of Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. Willumsen is one of the most celebrated Danish
painters and the museum collection holds a broad range of paintings, sketches, prints, ceramics, sculptures, photographs and architecture.
In 2005, a new extension by Danish Architect Theo Bjerg was opened. The new wing more than doubled the museum area and the museum went from being a local museum to having
international ambitions. This spawned the need for a new design programme. e-Types' design solution was inspired by the two large birds which serve as a landmark in front of the main building.
"The birds are not a particular species - but people call them 'the Ravens'," said Willumsen about his two Ravens. The two birds previously resided in front of the exhibition hall 'Den Frie' in Copenhagen and in the late 1960s they were moved to Frederikssund to the museum's main building.
The birds were redrawn for the design programme, so that they unite the Willumsen design essence and the modern extension which comprise the museum today. Furthermore, e-Types has designed a new characteristic typeface with clear references to the Danish Arts & Crafts Movement 'Skønvirke' of which Willumsen was a major part.
J.F. Willumsen died in 1958 in Cannes. He is buried in the museum park next to his second wife Edith Willumsen.
