The Danes' Own History
Everybody has a story to tell. The history of the World is the sum of the history of billions of people. And more often than not, the most touching or telling way of looking at history is looking at it through the eyes of someone you can relate to. Concept agency Substanz launched the idea in Denmark. And the Danes' Own history led to the Norwegians' own history, and the Swedes' and the Finns' and the Faroese' and….
Danskernes Egen Historie (The Danes' Own History) tells the stories of daily life in Denmark from year 1900 until today. Staring out with 8 collections of films, the concept has grown into a huge international success now encompassing Finland, Norway, The Faroe Islands and making its way to the rest of Europe. Apart from the core product: DVDs the project has also resulted in a board game and a number of books.
The basic idea of the company behind the product, Substanz, is: to tell the story of everyday life from the perspective of you and me rather than kings and generals and more often than not using films from private archives, amateur 8 mm. takes of work, play, fastivities and tragedies of everyday life. But this basic idea has been expanded into a wide range of themes and stories - about the Second World War, About Life in the countryside, about sports, the fate of the housewife, about local areas or specific professional walks of life.
The stories are spiced with accounts from first-hand sources and based exclusively on documentary shootings - more than 40.000 old documentaries were acquired from local archives and private persons all over Denmark for the first 8 DVDs alone.
e-Types has created the visual identity for The Danes Own History and the offspring siblings of the project.
e-Types work on the project includes a.o. DVD covers, point-of sale materials, flyers, adverts, books and even a board game.
